PAUL KLEE CASTLES

In this lesson first grade rock stars collaged together castles inspired by the artist, Paul Klee. We read The Cat and the Bird by Geraldine Elschner and discussed how shapes can tell stories. First we got messy and created painted papers using various patterns.

After the paper settled, I went to work as the shape cutter. At this stage in the year I want students to feel comfortable arranging shapes to create unique structures. Cutting shapes independently will come, but I did not want frustration over perfect cutting to overrule their creative process. Of course, we discussed how to safely cut the shapes we had into new ones (square into triangle, rectangle into trapezoid). They rocked it.  Enjoy these awesome castles and ask your child how shapes can tell stories!
